New Geogrid increases pavement life - April, 2009

Tech Glass Geogrid is used as an interlayer over distressed pavement, or within the overlay for reinforcement, increasing the overall life of the pavement. It retards the development of reflective cracks by absorbing stresses that arise from damaged pavement. A series of glass fiber strands are knitted into a grid and coated with modified polymer bitumen. Each glass strand has very high tensile strength and modulus of elasticity at low elongation that provides additional support to resist the migration of reflective cracks.

This paper describes the salient features of a project wherein geogrid reinforced soil walls with a welded wire mesh supported wrapped face were used as closure and return walls for the approaches to a flyover. The walls had a height of 15.0 m for one approach and 10.0 m for the other. Indigenously manufactured knitted and PVC coated polyester geogrids were used as the soil reinforcement. A welded wire mesh supported geogrid wrapped face with random rubble backing with an inward batter of 5º was used. A relatively fine-grained Yamuna sand was the fill material. Some of the challenging aspects considered in the design like large heights, acute angle corners, and weak foundation soils are discussed.

It is hard to believe that only two weeks from now, GIGSA will be hosting the first regional conference on geosynthetics to be held under the auspices of the IGS in Cape Town.
