Trackbed Stabilisation using Polyester Geogrids - Oct - Dec, 2007

Nonwoven & Technical Textile Magazine, Vol. 1 No. 1

The response of a railway track structure to applied train loading depends on the complex interaction of its components - the super structure comprising the rails, fasteners and the sleepers and the substructure consisting of the ballast, subballast (if any) and the subgrade. The horizontal and vertical deformations of the substructure induce deviations in the horizontal alignment and vertical profile of the track from the designed geometry. Such track roughness affects riding quality and also results in increased dynamic loads which in turn leads to further deterioration of the track geometry and increased wear and tear.  Such problems necessitate frequent track maintenance (packing) and sometimes speed restrictions also, thereby affecting the cost and efficiency of operations.

Three challenges in building SRWs - Nov, 2007

By Michael R. Simac, P.E. & Blaise J. Fitzpatrick, P.E.

While segmental retaining walls (SRWs) have been routinely used for more than 15 years now, there are still three challenging issues facing owners considering their use. What is the best way to procure, design, and then build these structures to minimize short-term problems and ensure long service life? This three-part series will examine each of  those issues, in an attempt to provide guidance for owners, designers and contractors that balances each of  their prospective risks and rewards. Although these articles will focus specifically on SRWs, all the other reinforced soil structures (i.e., MSEWs, Reinforced Soil Slopes (RSSs, basket walls, etc.) face these same issues, such that the information presented is equally applicable.

Woven Geotextiles in Pavement Overlay Applications - May, 2007

The Synthetic & Art Silk Mills Research Association

The earlier papers (March & April issues of MMTI) published by the authors have stressed on the possibilities of application of geotextiles in pavement overlay applications to improve the service life of roads. It has been identified that geotextiles can be used in the subgrade, at the pavement overlay or at the surface overlay to increase the service life of roads. This paper presents a report on the actual pavement overlay Geotextile material designed and developed by Sasmira & TechFab India and field trials of the same at a prominent location in Mumbai.

Conclusions: Sasmira & TechFab India developed woven geotextiles were found to be acceptable for pavement overlay applications as per laboratory evaluation. Both wovens and non wovens can be used for pavement overlay applications. These helps to improve the service life of roads. Reinforcing strength and permittivity characteristics are the major attributes for the geotextiles used for pavement overlay applications.
